How Do I Change My IP Address

February 13, 2014  |  Difficulty: Easy

change the IP address for a Windows®-based computer system.

An IP (Internet protocol) address is a special number that identifies your computer in a network. If you have a static IP address and need to change it, you will have to set it in your router or switch device settings. If you have a dynamic IP address, you just need to request a new one from the router.

The commands to change the IP address are quite simple and the overall process takes you just about a minute. The instructions below explain how to change the IP address for a Windows®-based computer system.

Changing an IP address:

  1. Press the “Winkey” and the “R” simultaneously on your keyboard.
  2. In the search box, type “C:\Windows\system32” and press enter.
  3. Now locate and run the “cmd.exe” file to launch the command line.
  4. Type “ipconfig /renew” command and press the “Enter” key.
  5. You are done. After a few seconds, you will be assigned a new IP address.

Note:

  • Remember you should have an account with administrator rights for this change.
