how to eject CD or DVD from a Mac®

New Macintosh® users are often perplexed when they first start to use these innovative computers. A frequently asked question from novice Mac® users is where to find the eject button for a CD or DVD in the optical drive. Mac® disc towers are built without an eject button, but there are four possible ways you can get your CD or DVD out of the optical drive. Check the list below to find the one that is most suitable for you.

Methods of Ejecting a Disc from a Mac® Optical Drive:

  1. Keyboard key – On the keyboard there is a special key for ejecting the disc drive. It is usually placed above the “delete” key in the upper right corner.
  2. The Finder – Right click on the disc displayed on your desktop and select “Eject”.
  3. Keyboard shortcut – For ejecting a CD or DVD from the optical drive, there is a special shortcut. Press “Command + E”.
  4. Drag & Drop in Trash – You can drag and drop the CD to your trash bin, which will then eject the disc.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Many applications that play CDs, like iTunes® or the Apple® DVD player, also have an eject button built right into the application. You can simply use that to eject the CD or DVD that you’re playing.
