How Do I Install Android™ 2.3.6 (XXJVU) on Galaxy S® i9000

February 12, 2013  |  Difficulty: Hard

install the XXJVU update on your Galaxy S

The latest release of Android™ Gingerbread available for the Samsung Galaxy™ phones is version 2.3.6, firmware XXJVU. This upgrade brings only a few changes, such as Lock Screen from Galaxy Note®, a photo editor app from Galaxy S®2 and Ice Cream Sandwich Special Face Unlock feature, in addition to the usual Android™ 2.3.6 Gingerbread features.

For most users, these changes are important enough to flash the ROM on this version; however, there is a more valuable reason why it is important to install XXJVU on your Galaxy S®. The Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) platform requires this update. So if you want Android™ 4.0 ICS, you have to upgrade to version 2.3.6 and have the CWM (Superuser access) root in your phone.

The instructions below explain how to install the XXJVU update on your Galaxy S® and how to add the CWM, which is necessary for an ICS upgrade.

Back up your Phone:

Remember all the data in your phone might be deleted, so be sure to back everything up including:

  1. Photos and images
  2. Contact list, SMS and other communication, such as emails
  3. Music and Video files
  4. Applications and Internet settings
  5. Bookmarks and stored pages
  6. All data stored on your SD card as a flash drive

Prepare your Phone for the latest upgrade:

  1. Before you upgrade, check to see if you have working drivers in Windows® 32 bit (x86)  and 64-bit (x64) so your smartphone can be properly connected with your PC.
  2. If you have installed the PC software application Samsung® Kies, be sure to exit it before using flash this ROM, or anything with odin software.

Upgrade Galaxy S® on Android™ 2.3.6 XXJVU:

  1. Download XXJVU firmware.
    Filename: I9000XXJVU_I9000OXAJVU_OXA.rar.
    Size: 225.9 MB.
    Password: samfirmware.com
  2. Download s1_odin_20100512.pit PIT file.
  3. Extract the downloaded file ‘I9000XXJVU_I9000OXAJVU_OXA.rar’ to get these 3 files:

  6. Disconnect your phone if it’s connected to the PC. Then switch it off. Wait 5-6 seconds for vibration to be sure the phone is completely off.
  7. Start  the Galaxy S® in “Download Mode” — press and hold "Volume_DOWN+Home+Power buttons" together  until a screen saying "Download Mode" comes up.
  8. Launch the Odin© application (from step 5) — Odin3 v1.7.exe.
  9. Connect your phone to PC now. You should get the message “Added! !” under the Odin© message box in the bottom left. If you don’t get “Added! !” message, than probably there is a problem with drivers.
  10. In Odin©, select these files at respective tabs:
    - Click the "PDA Tab", and select "CODE_I9000XXJVU_CL851880_REV03_user_low_ship.tar.md5"

  11. Make sure the "Re-Partition"checkbox in Odin© is selected. Also," Auto Reboot" and "F.Reset Time" checkboxes should be selected, too. Leave everything else on Odin© untouched.
  12. Click the "START" button to begin the flashing process. When it finishes, your phone will automatically reboot. You’ll get a PASS (with a green background) message in the left-most box at the very top of the Odin©.
  13. When it restarts, your Galaxy S® will be running the Android™ OS, v2.3.6 XXJVU firmware.

  5. Switch the mobile off. Wait 5-6 seconds for vibration to be sure the phone is completely off.

  8. Make sure “Re-Partition” checkbox is not selected. Leave the “Auto Reboot” and “F. Reset Time” checkboxes selected.
  9. Click  the "Start" button on Odin to flash the CF-Root kernel
  10. After the CF Root is installed, phone will restart automatically. When you see the PASS written in top left box, you can remove the cable.
  11. Your phone is rooted now. Superuser app, CWM app and clockworkmod based recovery has been installed.
