How Do I install a LPT1 Printer

October 05, 2011  |  Difficulty: Medium

How to connect a older parallel (LPT) printer if you have computer with this port

The majority of today’s printers are connected to a computer via a USB interface. However, it is not uncommon to install an older parallel printer that uses a LPT1 port. This is a typical type of connection for older computers and laser printers. If you have a working printer with a LPT1 parallel port and a computer with this port as well, you can simply connect and use them. The printer should be automatically recognized by Windows® and installed. Below are instructions on how to connect a LPT1 printer.

Instructions:

  1. Prepare your parallel printer cable. If you don’t have one, you can buy one in almost any computer or electronics store.
  2. Connect one end of the cable to the computer (the connector with pins) and the second end to the printer. Then, flip down the retainer clips to hold connector in place.
  3. Plug the printer into a power source using the appropriate power cable.
  4. Power on the printer by pressing the power button.
  5. Power on your computer and log on.
  6. When your Windows® operating system starts, it should display a “Found new hardware” message. Insert the installation CD that came with the printer. If you don’t see the “Found new hardware” message, install the LPT1 printer drivers from the CD.

Tips and tricks:

  • If you have problems with installing the drivers and you don’t have the CD, connect your computer to the Internet and let the operating system find the LPT1 printer drivers online.

Warnings:

  • Be aware that a data parallel cable is not in the usual contents of a printer’s package.
