how to manually reset the BIOS settings in case you are unable to enter the interface normally

At times, you may have a situation in which your computer will not start or run properly. If you were changing settings in the BIOS, then you might think that these changes may have caused the problem. This is typical when you overclock a CPU, and you may have problems if you accidently save the wrong settings in the boot options or hard drive settings, but in this situation you are able to enter the BIOS again and resolve the problem. This article will show you how to manually reset the BIOS settings in case you are unable to enter the interface normally.

Manually restoring BIOS:

  1. First, make sure that the PC is turned off. It is recommended that you unplug the computer from the electrical outlet.
  2. Now, remove the side cover of your computer’s case (the left one) to access the motherboard.
  3. If you have the manual for your motherboard or you have access to the Internet on another computer and find the electronic manual on the developer’s pages, take a look at it. Locate the clearing CMOS jumpers, usually called “CLR_CMOS”. If you don’t have the manual, find two or three pins with the label “CLR_CMOS” or something similar (often located near the battery).
  4. Not all manufacturers restore the BIOS in the same way, but these are the most typical possibilities:
    Two open pins
    – In a normal situation to clear the CMOS you have to short them temporarily using a metal object such as a screwdriver or jumper.
    Two jumped pins
    – In a normal situation, to clear the CMOS, temporarily remove the jumper.
    Three pins
    – Two of them are jumped in a normal situation. To clear the CMOS remove the jumper and temporarily short the other ones (the middle one is always shorted).
  5. Return the jumpers to their normal state and turn on the computer. The BIOS values will be loaded to the factory defaults.

Tips and Tricks:

  • If you are not sure about the pins and jumpers, you have an alternative option; unplug the computer from the electrical outlet and remove the battery for a while.
  • After the system restarts, go to the BIOS and load the factory defaults (select “Load Optimized Defaults”).

Warnings:

  • Always turn off your computer and unplug the power cord from the power outlet before cleaning the BIOS values.
  • After cleaning the CMOS values and before turning on your computer, be sure you return the pins and jumpers to their normal state.
