Believe it or not, your office chair is one of the most important purchases you can make to increase your daily comfort and safety.  Serious health problems can be caused by sitting for long periods of time in an improper position.  Issues like back pain, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and nerve damage can result from poor posture and ergonomics.

Purchasing a computer chair can be a confusing prospect due to the number of factors involved and prices ranging from as little as $50 to as much as $800 or more!  Some helpful online catalogs help you pick your chair based on the amount of time you will spend sitting each day.  For example, a more durable chair is required for an office employee than the conference room that only gets used a few hours per day or week.  Other considerations for computer chairs include body size, work duties, and any physical ailments that require specific support.

Here are some tips to remember when shopping for your computer chair:
  • Find a chair that fits your body size and frame.
  • Pick a chair based on the daily duties of your job.  For example, long periods of typing require back support while moving among workstations requires mobility and adjustability.
  • Choose a chair that allows for many adjustments like armrests, seat height, recline mobility, etc.
  • Be sure that the chair meets ANSI/BIFMA standards.
  • Check the manufacturers warranty before purchasing the chair.
  • If possible, buy your chair from someone who can show you the proper way to adjust and correctly position your chair.

The BIFMA Engineering Committee has developed a set of standards for evaluating the safety, durability, and structural adequacy of furniture.  These Safety and Performance Standards are reviewed every five years by the American National Standards Institute and help to ensure consumers of the quality and safety of their purchase.
