Review of Samsung® Galaxy S® III the long awaited smartphone flagship of Samsung

The Samsung® Galaxy S® series is one of the best known among Android™-based smartphones. Its release long awaited, the Samsung® Galaxy S® III is the latest in the flagship product line. Now that it’s being marketed, valuable information is being shared to introduce this new product with you. Could this new model reign as the next Android™ leader over its predecessors?

Hardware

If you’re expecting metal, ceramic or a glass body you’ll be disappointed, in fact the body is plastic, weighing in a mere  4.7 oz. even with its sizable 4.8’’ display. This beauty’s entire front is glass covered in impact and scratch resistant glass. Its back and edges are enclosed by a one-piece battery cover which houses ports for an audio jack, microUSB connector, a rear camera, LED flash, speaker and a “nail dent” for easy cover removal. Overall, it has an impressive solid body.

Above the display on the front side are a front camera, speaker, and light sensor. Below the display are the three typical Samsung Galaxy™ buttons. The middle one is a hardware button, flanked on the left with a “Menu” button and on the right with a “Back” button. By holding down the “Home” button, the last running applications appear – a function Samsung® has chosen not to make into separate keys, making this multi-use button very practical and efficient since “modern” software buttons generally reduce the display size. The “Home” button also doubles for unlocking the phone – a very convenient feature.

A generously sized 4.8’’ Super HD AMOLED display features 16-million colors with a resolution of 720 × 1280 pixels. The display carries sharp, realistic colors, very good viewing angles, and excellent readability even in direct sunlight.

The Samsung® Galaxy S® III has a 2,100mAh battery which holds quite a long life. The phone is powered by a Quad-Core Processor Samsung® Exynos™ 4412 working at 1,400 MHz with 1-2GB (depends on the market) of memory. Galaxy S® III is available in three capacities, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. Additionally, Samsung® offers accounts with 50GB cloud storage.

The package reveals high quality earphones that double as a headset with its integrated microphone, also included are a charger and USB cable. No other frills are bundled.

Software

After you start using the Galaxy S® III, you’ll notice that Samsung® took the time to prepare really functional software and a sleek operating system. Careful attention was given to the many details and special features that help facilitate your work day that are easy to learn and use. The small extensions that are available increase efficiency and productivity, helping to streamline your workflow.

The Samsung® Galaxy S® III includes the Android™ operating system version 4.0.4 with the TouchWiz® graphic interface. Standby screens are arranged horizontally side by side, ranging in number from 1 to 7.

All network and data settings are prepared the same as with all other Android™-based smartphones. You can set transferred data limit notifications, get detailed Wi-Fi information, etc. Besides the usual communication options, including wireless tethering, Galaxy S® III offers NFC.

The software boasts a number of beneficial options such as a choice of six types of vibration for incoming calls, smart standby mode that monitors current activity, and, a feature that doesn’t turn off the display when you are browsing on the Internet. It works well and is based on your face being recognized by the front camera. Another convenient feature is automatic calling to the contact you are messaging when you place the phone near your ear. And there are many other cool software features available.

Multimedia

The audio player and radio tuner perform well. The Samsung® Galaxy S® III delivers a lot of performance for multimedia with a bright, large display. You can easily play full HD video files in WMV, AVI, and MKV formats with subtitles.

Its camera can record full HD video with sound and take photos really fast, depending how fast you can move your finger.

Pros:

  • High performance
  • Memory cards support
  • Quality earphones and camera
  • Fast operating system response
  • Display Super AMOLED (720 × 1 280, 306 DPI)

Cons:

  • Notification LED has too high luminosity
  • Battery cover is easy to scratch
  • No HDMI connector
  • MicroSIM
  • Expensive

Price: ~ $630 (in time of writing this review)

The Samsung® Galaxy S® III predecessors, the Galaxy S® and Galaxy S® II, dominated the Android™-based phone market and often scored highest in rankings and tests. With its superior performance, design, and operation, the Galaxy S® III is very likely to be the next top choice.
