How to Survive a Storm

July 29, 2008  |  Difficulty: Easy

Storms are rarely ever predictable. They quickly plow through our lives without any warning, leaving us to pick up the pieces. When these catastrophes occur while we are camping, it can be an even larger mess. It not only is dangerous, but it can leave many people stranded if they do not know how to survive a storm.

From hurricanes and tornadoes to thunderstorms, hail storms, blizzards, and even floods – all of these are dangerous weather conditions. Though many of these only frequent a specific area, it is still essential to stay informed and prepared. For instance, if you are going on a camping trip and there are reports that there will be strong winds, you may want to pick additional accessories. From stronger tents to supplementary clothing – everything matters.

For most people, thunderstorms and lightning can actually be the most life threatening. According to the National Weather Service, there are at least 25 million lightening flashes in just the United States. Moreover, an average of 67 people die each year, falling victim to electrifying lightening bolts. For this reason, it is important to always keep your awareness heightened.

Most professionals recommend that you keep an eye on the weather at all times. Thunderstorms are popular during warm muggy days, especially when it has begun to rain. Once you begin to hear lightening, immediately find shelter. Deep in the wilderness? Though this isn’t the safest, some people just can’t get out in time. First and foremost, avoid all tall trees. Make sure to lie down to avoid bodies of water. If you are located on a mountain, also immediately find lower ground. When lightening begins to strike, you absolutely don’t want to be around it. In addition, if you have metal on your clothing, you need to remove it for it will attract electricity.
